A new migration tool, released in VMware Identity Manager 19.03, helps you upgrade from version 3.3 to 19.03. In this video, walk through the 3.3 to 19.03 upgrade process, and see the migration tool in action. Peter Björk made a great video on how to do this. I followed this and have a few remarks 🙂
Things to be aware of
- The onboard connector is no longer supported. You will have to migrate to a Windows machine.
- The video uses root account enabled but this is not really needed if you do not want to enable root. If you want to enable root, follow this KB.
- The video put’s the connector in outbound mode. If you do not want this then your connector must be available on the outside on the internet with a FQDN.
Prereqs
- Download the Cluster Migration Support Tools (cluster-support.tgz) from My VMware.
- Download the VMware Identity Manager offline upgrade package or upgrade via the online route.
- Download the VMware Identity Manager Standalone Connector Installer for Windows.
- A new or existing Windows server to install the Standalone Connector.
The online upgrade
The video does the offline upgrade route but I will explain the online route without enabling root account in vIDM. For offline you need to either upload the files to vIDM or wget them from a source as the video does.
Login to vIDM 3.3 with putty or another ssh tool as the sshuser. Then “su” to enable root.
now upload the cluster-support.tgz to /tmp on vIDM via WinSCP or other tool.
Then use cp to copy the file to the appropriate location.
cp /tmp/cluster-support.tgz /root
Now run the following commands to upgrade vIDM to 1903 online.
First, we check if there is an update, update the installer. Then we run the update.
/usr/local/horizon/update/updatemgr.hzn check
/usr/local/horizon/update/updatemgr.hzn updateinstaller
/usr/local/horizon/update/updatemgr.hzn update
If you did not upload the cluster-support.tgz to root then you will get a message.
If the cluster-support.tgz is there you will get a prompt to enter a password to export the current config and if you want to export the syslog / proxy settings.
When the whole process is done, do not reboot yet! download the backup first. Copy the config to /tmp with the command below and set the rights correctly or otherwise, you will not be able to download it via WinSCP.
cp yourconfigbackup.enc /tmp
chmod 777 /tmp/yourconfigbackup.enc
Now download that backup file with WinSCP and copy it to your new connector machine.
You can reboot the vIDM as required for the upgrade.
